I finally purchased a pair of Converse sneakers after hemming and hawing for well over a year.  I typically find ballet flats to be the chicest run around shoe, but there’s something about the appeal of a sneaker.  I’ve loved sneakers for a long time. After moving beyond Keds, I started with a pair of black and white checked Vans in middle school and then eventually graduated to Diesel sneakers in college. After reading Parisian Chic by Ines de la Fressange, I heavily considered buying a pair of Converse sneakers to wear in Paris, but then decided that I would feel more like myself in my black riding boots. And, the sneakers would look too new to be Paris cool.

As I grow older, I become more practical in my clothing choices, particularly when it comes to shoes. We all need comfy shoes to run around in, especially those of us who regularly pound the pavement of city streets. For a while now, we’ve seen many photos of chic women wearing Converse sneakers. It was only a matter of time before I felt compelled to join them. One particularly influential inspiration was a woman I saw on the street where I live; she was another young mother, dressed in the chicest casual outfit possible: a Tod’s D-bag, Converse sneakers without the laces, jeans, a jacket, and a gray scarf.  These inspiring images that I’ve shared, combined with the idea of having a great shoe to run around in the parks and playgrounds with my son, ultimately made my decision for me.  I believe that the best way to wear a pair of classic sneakers like Converse, is the way that the women pictured above did it:  with a fabulous handbag, typically leather, and chic separates, usually in black.

It was difficult to choose between Converse and Superga sneakers. Supergas have been on my radar long before I started seeing people on the streets wearing them. I ultimately decided that I prefer Converse sneakers in black and Supergas in navy. I still may buy a pair of navy Supergas, depending on what other items inspire me. I have to make sure I stick to my 25 items, after all!

I purchased my sneakers at Converse’s Soho store after viewing the Great Gatsby costumes at Prada. The Converse store was a total zoo. I found it a bit humorous that most of the customers were European; it’s nice to know that even Europeans go shopping when they’re on vacation. I understand that a self-service model where the customer places his/her order for sneakers to try on seems efficient, but in terms of quality of service, it’s not the greatest. I tried on every style of low Converse sneakers in black. I had already looked at all of the styles online and I thought that I might go with the sneakers without laces (which looked ridiculous on me) or the Jack Purcells, but I ultimately found that the classic All Stars looked best on me. No matter which pair you choose, there’s no mistaking that sneaks are chic.  And, as I told my husband, “When do I ever buy $50 shoes?”

That’s one of the beautiful things about Converse shoes: pretty much anyone can afford to wear them.  And they work great in a high-low, formal-casual mix of clothing.  A couple of weeks ago I wore them with a plain black long sleeved T, black Genetic Denim skinny jeans, my beloved black Comptoir des Cotonniers jacket I purchased at Galeries Lafayette in Nice, and an equestrian print scarf that was randomly purchased at Urban Outfitters about 4 years ago.

The sneakers went from my son’s music class- to brunch- to the park- to coffee- and then home. They were comfortable, and every time I looked down at them, the sight of them gave me pleasure. That’s what all clothing should do.

Do you wear sneakers?  If so, which brand(s)? Do you wear Converse, and if so, what’s your favorite style? What pieces of clothing are giving you pleasure these days?

Gone in a Flash

Miu Miu loafersBarneys

I don’t know how these embellished velvet Miu Miu loafers previously slipped past me, but somehow they did.  Thankfully, a pair caught my attention.  When exiting the subway station on my way to work yesterday, I couldn’t stop staring at the sparkling-like-a-diamond jewel embellished heels of a woman otherwise sporting no adornment.  My eyes followed her heels until they were out of sight.  As luck would have it, this morning while browsing Pinterest,  I stumbled upon this photo of the loafers paired with a chic black tote.

Miu MiuPinterest

My style desires typically don’t include flashy shoes, but maybe that’s why I’m so captivated by these.  The sparkly heels on these loafers would add excitement to any outfit and the sumptuous velvet makes them extra luxurious.

I own a pair of striped cotton smoking loafers, but velvet smoking loafers are still on my list of items to acquire.  This might be the pair.

How do you feel about velvet loafers?  Do you own any?   What’s your take on adding a bit of flash to an outfit?

P.S.

I couldn’t resist sharing these toile pieces that popped up on Net-A-Porter this week:

This skirt suit by Nigerian born desiger Duro Oluwu is a great way to incorporate toile into your work wardrobe.  I love the contrast of the black toile print on the sleeves and left side of the jacket with the blue toile print.

Toile Away

I’ve noticed a lot of toile items popping up recently.  Toile, also known as toile de Jouy, originated in 18th century France, and referred to cotton or linen fabrics depicting scenes of the French countryside.  Since the 18th century, toile patterns have expanded to include a large variety of scenes from various locales.  Toile is sometimes confused with Chinoiserie, which is roughly French for “Chinese-esque.”  Chinoiserie likewise depicts landscapes, however, they are distinctly Chinese.  Chinoiserie can also refer to a broader set of design elements that appears on furniture and accessories.  Chinoiserie merits its own post; I’ll save that  for another day.  What I most enjoy about toile is that it tells a story.

I don’t wear shorts, but I had to purchase a pair last spring just to own a bit of this fabulous Lilly toile fabric!  I still haven’t worn them, but one of these days I will (or do something else with the fabric):

Toile isn’t just restricted to wallpaper.  You can add a dose of toile to a room with panels, window treatments, bed linens, or even a single pillow.

Ralph Lauren, Hinson & Company, Thibaut, and Shumacher are all excellent resources for toile fabrics and wallpapers.  If you don’t wish to paper an entire wall, consider framing a piece of toile fabric.

Another creative idea is to hang English transferware (or other toile patterned china) on the wall as you would a collection of paintings or photographs.

Etsy has a wealth of toile products, from corsets to crib bumpers.

Do you own any toile clothing or home accessories?  Do you have any resources for toile products?  If you could choose any pattern as a signature motif, what would it be?

Build a Wardrobe from Scratch: The Accessories

You’ll notice that in all of my “Building a Wardrobe” posts, I highlight classic pieces.  I believe that when building a wardrobe, classic pieces provide a foundation.  Once you have built this foundation for your wardrobe, you can focus on collecting items that reflect your personality without worrying about missing essentials.
Without further ado, here are the 10 accessories that I find to be essential, in both the “Luxe” and “Less” categories:

What do you think of my selection of accessories?  Which accessories do you find essential?  Which items do you believe justify a Luxe price tag?

End of the Week Inspiration

Yes, a second post in the same day, a record that may never repeat itself.

This week I found much to admire.  I didn’t realize until I was putting this post together that I’ve been particularly inspired by peach and turquoise hues this week.  Here are my picks!

This Alexander McQueen jacket is utterly fabulous!  I love pieces of clothing with an architectural quality to them.

I’m not a shorts person, but for some reason, this Lilly Pulitzer jacket and shorts ensemble looks fresh to my eyes.

Window of NY

I read about New York based graphic designer Jose Guizar’s Windows of New York project on escapade.  Each week, Jose Guizar illustrates a different window in New York City.  The artist says, “This project is part
an ode to architecture and part a self challenge to never stop looking
up.”  I love these illustrations and the reminder to notice small design details.  I’m also a fan of window watching; peering inside open windows, imagining the lives being lived inside.  Are you?

What has inspired you this week?

Metallic shoes are even more versatile than black; in a sandal, metallic provides just the right amount of glitz without being too flashy.

The total for each category?  $4300 for the Luxe items and $418.88 for the Less items.  Once again, the “Less” items cost approximately one tenth less than the “Luxe” items.  I swear I’m not doing this on purpose!

What do you think of my shoe staple selections?

Build a Wardrobe from Scratch: The Clothing Essentials

Recently, I asked myself the question of which items I would buy if I had to build a wardrobe from scratch.  I came up with under 30 clothing items, 5 pairs of shoes, and 10 staple accessories, with examples in both Luxe and Less budgeting categories.  Over the next few days I’ll be sharing these items with you.

Below are the clothing items that I picked.  You’ll notice that I chose a color scheme of mostly black, with some navy and white/khaki.  Buying a lot of black, of course, is a great way to ensure that your wardrobe contains items that are chic and interchangeable.  In order to extend wearability, I also suggest buying items in seasonless fabrics.

*With the exception of the 2 suits, I believe that this list of clothing will allow any one to be appropriately dressed for almost any occasion.  For those whose activities don’t regularly require a suit, I suggest swapping out the 2 suits for 2 outfits comprised of a top and pants.

This little exercise makes me wonder if I should have focused my 25 Things List on acquiring upgraded versions of each of the essentials on my list.  And, it has made me aware of my need for a navy sheath dress!

FYI, the total cost of all of the “Luxe” items is $18,219 and the total cost for the “Less” items is $1,884.95.  Keep in mind that I didn’t take into account additional discounts for which some of the “Less” items were eligible.  That means that the “Less” wardrobe is approximately one tenth of the cost of the Luxe wardrobe.  Adding up these costs definitely puts things in perspective.  Given an unlimited budget, I don’t believe that I would choose to buy the Luxe version each time, would you?  Of course, the old adage “You get what you pay for…” always applies; clothing made of higher quality fabric will last longer.  I believe that in some instances, buying the Luxe version is not just more stylish, but also more cost effective.  For example, a Burberry trench can be worn for years beyond its cheaper counterpart.

What do you think of my list?  Is there anything that you feel should be added or removed?  Which items do you believe are indispensable to building a wardrobe?  From which designers would you purchase Luxe items and which brands are your go-tos for looking stylish when spending Less?

About Oscar…

I know that everyone has been putting in their two cents on who was the best dressed and best tressed at the Oscars.  I always enjoy reading the red carpet reviews by Habitually Chic and Elements of Style; I tend to agree with their views the majority of the time.  Like Erin of EOS, I agree that many of the ladies looked lovely and had beautiful dresses, but most were lacking the Wow factor.  I would have enjoyed seeing the actresses in something edgier.  And, as Heather of Habitually Chic noted, many of the dresses looked better on screen than they do in photos, mainly Jessica Chastain’s Armani Privé dress, which was one of my favorites.  I really liked Anne Hathaway’s Prada dress, but not the fit.  I liked Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior Couture dress, but I felt that she needed more color.  Amy Adams wore a beautifully constructed Oscar de la Renta dress, but I didn’t love it.  I thought that singers Jennifer Hudson (In Roberto Cavalli and Armani Privé) and Adele (in Jenny Packham) looked gorgeous and they certainly had the vocal performances to match.  Reese Witherspoon, Adele, and Jennifer Hudson get my vote for best hair of the night.  Naomi Watts in Armani Privé gets my best dressed of the night and Jennifer Garner’s plum Gucci dress wins my second prize.

It seems that some of the best dresses were seen only at the Vanity Fair’s Oscar After Party.  Perhaps the stars felt more comfortable wearing edgier ensembles for the after party than for the ceremony?

After a couple of days of Oscar red carpet buzz, another Oscar has been garnering attention:  Oscar de la Renta for the Outnet.  Style maven Olivia Palmero models Oscar de la Renta’s special line.  Although the prices are a fraction of ODLR couture prices, they still aren’t cheap.  After less than 24 hours online, most of the items are already sold out!  I’m already looking forward to the next offering.  Here are my favorites from the current collection:

Bow Regard

Kate Spade keeps taunting me with emails about their new bow bedecked collection.  For the past couple of years, Kate Spade has done a “Year of…” series with a theme highlighting a collection of merchandise each month.  Two years ago, it was a color, last year it was a pattern, and this year it is “Things We Love.”  January’s thing is a well-placed bow.  I’m a sucker for bows.  The above pieces are my favorites from Kate Spade’s new collection.  One of my first bow items (circa 2004) was actually a pink leather Kate Spade purse with a subtle bow on the shoulder strap.  I still enjoy wearing this bag in warm weather.  I really should count the number of bow items that I own.  I have bags, shoes, jewelry, jackets, blouses, dresses, skirts, tees, sweaters…  Even my favorite sunglasses have bows on them.

I have 2 rules about wearing bows:
1. No more than 2 or 3 bow items at one time.
2. The bows can’t be too cheesy.  Cheeky yes, cheesy no.

Here are some current bow items that I love:

Of course, I’m always desiring Valentino and Oscar de la Renta bows.  Along with Chanel, these designers are the true bow masters.

I spotted this great tutorial for tying the perfect bow on George & Ruby, the blog of Oscar de la Renta Creative Head, Marissa Kraxberger.  I find this blog completely relatable as MK is also a mom with a career living and raising toddlers in NYC.

Lately the bow tie has been popping up on women and was recently highlighted on stylesetter Amanda Brooks’ fabulous blog, I Love Your Style (By the way, her book of the same name is also great).  I adore bow ties on men and I think I might just try one myself, especially if I could look as cool as the girl pictured by The Sartorialist below.

How do you feel about bow ties on women?
